Within this talk, Srila Acharyadev speaks in depth about the following passage from Sri Chaitanya-charitamrta (Madhya-lila, 16.237–241) spoken by Sriman Mahaprabhu to Raghunath Das Goswami in Shantipur:

sthira hañā ghare yāo, nā hao vātula
krame krame pāya loka bhava-sindhu-kūla
“Be steady and return home. Do not be crazy. Gradually one reaches the shore of the ocean of material existence.

markaṭa-vairāgya nā kara loka dekhāñā
yathā-yogya viṣaya bhuñja’ anāsakta hañā
“Do not show yourself to the public like a monkey renunciate. Rather, maintain your material life as befitting, being detached from it.

Amṛta-Pravāha-Bhāṣya: Markaṭa-vairāgya (monkey renunciation) is characterised by externally donning the loincloth and appearance of a renunciate but continuing to think of mundane enjoyment within one’s heart and secretly associate with women (or engage in sinful activities like partaking of intoxicants, gambling, accumulating excessive amounts of wealth and so on).

antare niṣṭhā kara, bāhye loka-vyavahāra
achirāt kṛṣṇa tomāya karibe uddhāra
“Be steadfastly devoted to Kṛṣṇa within your heart but externally perform the duties of a householder. Proceed in this way and very soon Kṛṣṇa will rescue you.”

vṛndāvana dekhi’ yabe āsiba nīlāchale
tabe tumi āmā-pāśa āsiha kona chhale
se chala se-kāle kṛṣṇa sphurābe tomāre
kṛṣṇa-kṛpā yā̐re, tāre ke rākhite pāre”
“Later when I return to Nīlāchal after visiting Vṛndāvan you will come to Me, making use of a pretext. Kṛṣṇa will reveal this pretext to you at that time. Who can detain one who has received the mercy of Kṛṣṇa? (One who receives the mercy of Kṛṣṇa cannot be detained by anyone.)”
